Making cross-border compliance self-serve

International selling is no longer reserved for enterprises. In a 2023 Stripe survey, 84% of responding businesses reported selling into more than one country — including 81% of single-person companies. But while the barriers to global trade have fallen, the tax obligations that come with it haven't gotten any simpler.

Stripe Tax was built to handle the calculation and collection side of that problem. At Stripe Sessions last month, the company extended the product to cover the full lifecycle: registration, calculation, collection, and filing. The goal remains self-service. Stripe says it encoded its in-house tax expertise into a product that a business of any size can operate without a dedicated tax team.

Guided registration across markets

Before a business can legally collect tax in most countries, it has to register — but the triggering conditions differ wildly by jurisdiction. In the UK, a local business can sell up to £90,000 before registration is required. In Spain, registration is mandatory before the first sale.

Stripe Tax already alerted merchants when they crossed a threshold in any market they sell into. Now, that alert leads into a guided registration flow. Business information is prefilled from the Stripe account, which cuts down the time needed to complete registration in each new jurisdiction.

Automated filing via Taxually integration

Registration switches on the obligation to file returns, and filing schedules are just as fragmented as registration rules. A business selling across several countries — or even several US states — can easily end up with hundreds of returns per year, each with its own format and data requirements.

To handle that, Stripe Tax now integrates with filing partner Taxually. The integration determines where and when filing is due and automates the submission process. Because the merchant's Stripe transaction data flows directly into the filing pipeline, the returns stay timely and accurate without manual reconciliation.

What's on the roadmap

Stripe says it is expanding country support and adding new verticals, with events and ticketing scheduled for later this year. Full documentation is available in the Stripe docs, and existing users can enable Tax from the Stripe Dashboard.
