Stripe opens Issuing to every US business
Stripe has made Issuing, its API for creating and managing virtual and physical cards, available to all businesses in the United States. Any company can now activate the service from the Stripe Dashboard and begin issuing cards immediately, with no setup or monthly fees.
Issuing is designed for companies that need to control how funds are spent without relying on standard corporate expense cards. Stripe cites customers such as Zipcar, which wants renters to pay for gas without using personal cards, and Postmates, which needs couriers to complete purchases while blocking unapproved transactions. These use cases require businesses to create their own cards rather than hand out conventional corporate cards.
The card issuance industry has historically been slow and rigid—integration and manufacturing can take months, and the underlying stack offers limited flexibility. Stripe positions Issuing as the first developer-first issuance platform, with self-serve APIs, public documentation, and a custom manufacturing process that lets companies order branded physical cards from day one.
On-demand branded cards
Customized physical cards can be delivered in two business days. Card designs are selected in the Dashboard, where businesses upload a logo and place orders at any time. Stripe handles production, printing, and shipping.
Spending limits and controls
Fine-grained spending limits can be set on every card. Businesses have two options: preset spending rules, such as a weekly food budget cap, or real-time authorization decisions made per charge—for example, flagging a courier transaction that is not recognized. Both approaches are detailed in the spending controls documentation.
Push provisioning to mobile wallets
Cardholders can add their card to Apple Pay or Google Pay with a single tap via push provisioning. This eliminates manual entry of card numbers and reduces the burden of handling sensitive data, making funds accessible across online, in-app, and in-store payments.
Pricing
There are no setup or monthly fees associated with Issuing. Virtual cards cost 10¢ per card; branded physical cards cost $3 per card. Transaction fees are waived for the first $500K in transaction volume. After that, each card transaction costs 0.2% + 20¢. Custom pricing is available for companies with high volume or specialized business models.
US businesses can activate Issuing directly from the Dashboard. Businesses outside the US can request notification when the service becomes available in their country. Feedback and questions can be directed to [email protected].
Stripe Issuing cards offered under this program are issued by Regions Bank, an Alabama FDIC-insured state bank. Card Issuing services may require approval and are subject to terms and conditions.
