Early Purchases Under Stripe’s Negative Emissions Commitment
Most climate models agree that avoiding catastrophic warming will require removing roughly 6 gigatons of CO₂ from the atmosphere per year by 2050—an amount comparable to the United States’ current annual emissions. Responding to that need, Stripe last year announced its Negative Emissions Commitment: a pledge to spend at least $1M annually on direct carbon removal with secure long-term storage, regardless of price.
Since then, a small internal team has focused on accelerating the carbon removal market by acting as an early, paying customer for promising technologies. The first purchases under that commitment are now in place.
