Cloudflare names Satyen Desai to lead Southeast Asia and Korea expansion

Cloudflare has appointed Satyen Desai as Head of Southeast Asia and Korea (SEAK), a newly created role focused on expanding the company's customer base, partner ecosystem, and local teams across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Indochina, and Korea. The move signals an aggressive push into a region Cloudflare sees as ripe for growth.

Desai brings more than 27 years of IT industry experience to the role, with prior stints at IBM, SAP, Cisco, NTT, and Oracle. His career began at IBM Australia in 1997 as a graduate, where he spent 15 years moving through delivery and sales roles. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Information Engineering from Massey University in New Zealand, having grown up in India, Bahrain, and New Zealand before settling in Melbourne.

Why Desai made the move

Desai cites four primary factors behind his decision to join Cloudflare:

  • Growth trajectory: Cloudflare reported 51% year-over-year revenue growth in Q3, adding a record 170 large customers in the process.
  • Product velocity: He joined during Cloudflare's 11th Birthday Week, where new products were announced and made available across the company's global data centers simultaneously.
  • Collaborative culture: His interview process involved conversations with 11 colleagues that he described as two-way dialogues, emphasizing how past experiences are leveraged across teams.
  • Leadership principles: Cloudflare's stated values of being Curious, Transparent, and Principled align with his own priorities of Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency.

Regional opportunity

Desai points to concrete numbers that underscore the region's digital acceleration. In 2020 alone, approximately 40 million people across six Southeast Asian countries — Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand — came online for the first time, bringing the region's total internet user base to 400 million with some of the world's largest e-commerce markets.

Korea presents a different but equally compelling picture, with 96% internet penetration and government investment in its Digital New Deal program focusing on data, networks, and AI technologies.

Building local teams

Cloudflare is staffing up locally across the region, hiring for roles including strategic and account executives, channel managers, business development representatives, solution engineers, and customer success managers. Companies of all sizes — from large enterprises and public sector organizations to startups and individual developers — are the target for Cloudflare's security, performance, and reliability services.
