GitHub bundles free virtual-event tools into the Student Developer Pack
GitHub has added a Virtual Event Kit to its Student Developer Pack, giving verified students free access to a set of tools aimed at planning and running online campus events. The kit covers everything from design assets and live-streaming software to domain registration and server hosting.
The kit is the result of feedback from student organizers who struggled with the logistics of virtual events during the past year, according to GitHub. Organizing an online event typically means coordinating moderators across time zones, offering call-in options, adding live captioning, and maintaining a stable connection—all while keeping attendees engaged.
The GitHub Virtual Event Kit includes tools from partners such as Discord, Canva, StreamYard, Namecheap, Name.com, and Microsoft Azure. GitHub Education says the goal is to reduce the amount of technology management required so organizers can focus on the event itself.
What is included
The Virtual Event Kit bundles six primary tools, each targeting a different stage of event production:
- Design event graphics and assets with Canva
- Host talk shows or live-coding streams with StreamYard
- Set up a hackathon server using a Discord template
- Manage domain registration with Namecheap
- Deploy event landing pages on Microsoft Azure
- Use Name.com for domains, email, and hosting
How to get access
The Virtual Event Kit is available automatically to anyone who has the Student Developer Pack. Students who are not yet members can apply if they are verified as enrolled students, are 13 years or older, and are located in a region where GitHub is available. Verification can be completed with a school-issued email, a student ID, or other proof of academic enrollment.
GitHub is also using the kit for its own content on GitHub Campus TV, which broadcasts weekly shows on Twitch as an example of what can be built with the new tools.
