CLI tools dominate this month’s open source updates
From infrastructure management to video creation, this month’s releases span a wide range of use cases. Several projects have crossed significant version milestones, with a noticeable push toward command-line tooling and support for Apple’s M1 chip.
Puppeteer 9.0
The browser automation library reaches version 9.0 just weeks after its previous major update. This release makes the filechooser API synchronous and adds a long list of bug fixes and new features. The update also improves functionality, fixes installation issues on Apple M1 chips and bundles an updated version of Chromium.
Pulumi 3.0
The infrastructure-as-code platform now supports building, deploying and managing cloud infrastructure and applications in a single workflow. Version 3.0 incorporates more than 200 contributions from over 150 community members. Highlights include the Pulumi Automation API, complete Azure and Google Cloud support, multi-language SDKs and new integrations across the Go and Python ecosystems.
pkg 5.0
This command-line utility packages Node.js applications into standalone executables that run without a Node.js installation. The latest version adds support for symlinks and pnpm workflows, updates dependencies and reduces build times on Windows.
Argo CD 2.0
Argo CD is a declarative GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes, automating application deployments to target environments. Version 2.0 ships a redesigned user interface, built-in notifications, enhanced Kubernetes resource synchronisation, log viewing capabilities and improved security controls.
Remotion 2.0
This React-based framework enables programmatic video creation with real-time editing. The second major release introduces audio capabilities, including the ability to embed audio in video output, visualise audio and export audio files to *.mp3, *.wav and *.aac formats.
Gradle 7.0
The build automation tool used by millions of developers at companies including LinkedIn, Netflix, Adobe and Elastic has reached version 7.0. File system watching is now enabled by default, which accelerates builds, and the update brings support for Java 16 plus optimisation for Apple’s M1 chips. Performance improvements and expanded plugin support round out the release.
CircuitPython 6.2.0
While not a major version bump, this update to the microcontroller programming language adds support for Raspberry Pi’s RP2040 microprocessor. CircuitPython remains a lightweight option for embedded development and now runs on the newest boards from Raspberry Pi.
Gitmoji 4.0
The command-line commit message assistant now requires Node v12 or newer. Beyond the core version bump, Gitmoji 4.0 updates underlying dependencies including pkg, babel and chalk, so users will need current versions of those tools as well.
Croc 9.0
This file transfer utility moves files and directories securely between computers with end-to-end encryption. The latest version displays folders on the receiving machine, adds prompts for automatic file overwrites and alerts users when duplicate files exist at the destination. Curve configuration options are also available.
Spyder 5.0
The Python-based scientific development environment has been updated for scientists, engineers and data analysts. Version 5.0 includes a dark theme, refreshed light theme styling, redesigned toolbars and new icon sets, along with updated APIs and plugin architecture for meaningful community extensions.
