May's Significant Open Source Releases

May brought a wave of major version updates across the open source ecosystem, from 3D printing software to configuration management tools. Here are the releases that stood out to our editors this month.

Cura 5.0

Ultimaker's Cura remains the go-to slicing software for millions of 3D printing enthusiasts. Version 5.0 introduces a completely new slicing engine, addressing long-standing issues users faced when preparing complex models for print. The update also adds native support for Apple's M1 chips and includes workflow refinements throughout the application. Additional fixes and improvements are detailed in the official changelog.

Apollo 2.0

Apollo tackles the challenge of managing application and cluster configurations from a single control point. The 2.0 release expands Java Runtime Environment compatibility to versions 8, 11, and 17. Users will also notice a redesigned homepage aimed at improving navigation and readability. The complete list of changes is available in the release notes.

Snipe-IT 6.0

Snipe-IT offers a self-hosted alternative to spreadsheet-based asset management. Built on Laravel 8 and running entirely from the web, it eliminates the need for local executables or high-end hardware. The 6.0 release, which spent over a year in development, raises the minimum PHP requirement to 7.4 while adding official PHP 8 support. Key improvements include a refreshed mobile UI/UX, broader compatibility, and faster page loads. More details can be found in the changelog.

Ghost 5.0

Ghost continues to evolve as a publishing platform for creators who need built-in membership, subscription, and newsletter tools. The 5.0 update, which we last covered in March 2021, adds premium membership tiers, support for multiple newsletters, promotional offers, granular audience segmentation, and expanded analytics. FX 23.0

FX (Function eXecution) is a terminal-based JSON viewer that supports JavaScript, Python, and Ruby scripting, along with mouse input and streaming data. The major headline for version 23.0 is a full rewrite from Node.js to Go. Developers also invested considerable effort in polishing the terminal viewing experience. Installation instructions and theme options are available in the project repository.

Enioka Scan 2.0

Android developers looking for a vendor-neutral barcode scanning solution might find Enioka Scan fitting. The library works across a wide range of hardware, with a compatibility list maintained in the repository. Version 2.0 brings reworked APIs that simplify communication between the scanner service and individual devices. Streamlined interfaces and improved search handling contribute to faster overall performance. Full details are in the release notes.
