Web3 Gateways Open to All Cloudflare Customers

Cloudflare is making its Ethereum and IPFS gateways generally available to every customer after an eight-month private beta. Starting today, users can configure a zone for Ethereum, IPFS, or both directly from the Cloudflare dashboard. The company says interest in the beta, first announced last September, was substantial, and the goal now is to put the infrastructure into wider use across the developer community.

Operational Improvements During Beta

Work during the beta period focused on turning the gateways into fully managed services rather than experimental endpoints.

  • A dedicated API now provides end-to-end managed hostname deployment, streamlining gateway creation and scaling without manual setup steps.
  • A new zone-level UI brings web3 configuration into the standard dashboard. The interface is designed to mirror the API’s capabilities so teams can work through whichever tooling they already use.
  • Testnet support is on the way, letting developers validate and harden applications before pushing to mainnet. This reduces the risk of failures reaching production and affecting end users.

Cloudflare is also running the gateways on top of its own infrastructure, including SSL for SaaS and Workers. That choice allows customers to apply their existing HTTP-level controls—rate limits, WAF rules, custom security filters, video serving, custom redirects, and Workers logic—to traffic bound for web3 gateways.

API documentation and the new dashboard interface are available as of this release, and product documentation provides further setup guidance.

Ways the Gateways Are Already in Use

Thousands of individuals, companies, and DAOs have been building on the gateways during the private beta. Cloudflare lists a few representative patterns from that period:

  1. DeFi DAOs serve front-end applications through the IPFS gateway to avoid latency and cache penalties during global distribution.
  2. NFT designers use the Ethereum gateway to launch new offerings and the IPFS gateway for decentralized storage of assets.
  3. Large dapp developers aggregate multiple gateway offerings into a single pane of glass to handle traffic spikes without juggling separate systems.

Migration Path for Existing Users

Current users will be moved off the legacy gateway endpoints and onto the new API-based system. The transition requires a Cloudflare account if one hasn’t already been created. Free-tier users retain access to the gateways at no cost, with no traffic caps and the same pricing model as other tiers.
