The company states that it is united with the people of Ukraine and condemns the violence, while emphasizing its role as a neutral home for open source collaboration and the free flow of information.
In a message to its community, GitHub underscored that its core mission—providing a safe and open platform for all developers—remains unchanged despite the conflict. The company is continuing its existing efforts to ensure free open source services are accessible in every country, including Russia. At the same time, it is actively working with legal counsel to comply with evolving export controls and trade regulations aimed at restricting Russia's access to technology.
Security and Compliance Measures
As part of its response, GitHub is urging all developers to harden their accounts against compromise. The company recommends enabling two-factor authentication, ideally with WebAuthn security keys, to protect against unauthorized access during this period of heightened cyber risk.
GitHub also detailed its approach to government mandates related to the conflict. The legal team is thoroughly examining all new requirements, and the company is implementing "stringent new export controls" as they evolve. Transparency remains a priority: all government takedown notices processed by the company are publicly posted, a practice GitHub believes is essential to good governance.
The company is actively enforcing its Acceptable Use Policies and Community Guidelines across its forums. Users are encouraged to report potential violations, and the Community and Product Operations teams are monitoring discussions, with the authority to lock conversations that breach the codes of conduct for the community forum and public feedback channels.
Supporting Employees and Relief Efforts
GitHub has stated that it stands by every employee regardless of nationality or origin. To facilitate direct support for Ukraine, the company highlighted its existing donation matching program, which matches up to $15,000 in donations per employee annually. The Social Impact team has provided a list of vetted organizations supporting Ukraine.
On a corporate level, GitHub is donating $100,000 to the humanitarian organization Razom and matching an additional $200,000 of employee donations. This matching extends to volunteer hours spent working for charities, broadening the company's relief support across the affected region.
