Engineering a Fairer Foundation
Stripe’s stated mission is to increase the distribution of opportunity, making it fairer and more broadly accessible. Systemic racism directly contradicts that goal, so the company has committed to specific, near-term actions alongside longer-term internal changes.
Acknowledging that no single corporate statement changes society, Stripe emphasizes that meaningful progress requires many coordinated actors. The company also recognizes that as a global organization, issues of race and discrimination extend beyond the current US protests, affecting every region where it operates.
Immediate Financial Commitments
To act without delay while identifying more impactful long-term measures, Stripe is taking the following immediate steps:
- Waiving $1 million in processing fees for nonprofits raising funds to combat systemic racism, prioritizing organizations relevant to the current moment.
- Contributing $100,000 each to five organizations focused on reforming US policing practices or the criminal justice system.
Internal Representation Targets
Stripe openly acknowledges a significant disparity within its own workforce: the fraction of US employees who are Black is substantially lower than the national demographic. To address this, the company plans to intensify hiring and development efforts for Black employees across all teams and seniority levels, with the explicit goal of meaningfully growing representation over the coming year.
The company states it cannot solve these issues alone but is committed to supporting a society where safety, security, and access to opportunity are available to everyone.
