OpenOffice.org 2.0 GTK Detection Fails Outside GNOME
Using Fluxbox as a primary window manager with gnome-settings-daemon running keeps GTK-based applications and GNOME apps properly configured. However, OpenOffice.org 2.0 uses an opaque detection mechanism to decide whether the environment is KDE or GTK. When it finds neither, it falls back to a legacy interface that resembles software from 1997.
Launching gnome-session sets up an unidentified component that persuades OpenOffice.org to render with the GTK theme. The trigger is not an environment variable, since setting identical environment variables under both GNOME and Fluxbox produces no behavioral difference. The likely candidate is a socket or temporary file that gnome-session creates, but OpenOffice.org's obfuscated source keeps the exact mechanism obscure. A workaround that forces OpenOffice.org 2.0 to use GTK outside a full GNOME session remains an open question.
