Dropbox retires Public folder for new accounts
Dropbox has announced that, starting July 31, 2012, newly created user accounts will no longer include a Public folder. The change follows April's launch of simple link sharing, which lets users share any file or folder in their Dropbox via a generated link. That mechanism is intended to be a more generalized and scalable replacement for the Public folder's most common use cases.
Impact on existing applications
Developers whose apps rely on the Public folder should migrate to the /shares API call, which provides the link-sharing functionality. Dropbox emphasizes that Public folders already present in existing accounts will continue to work unchanged; the deprecation applies only to accounts created after the cutoff date.
