Groups API launches for Dropbox for Business
Dropbox has added Groups support to Dropbox for Business, along with the corresponding API endpoints. Team admins can now create and manage member lists, which makes it straightforward to grant folder access to entire sets of people rather than managing permissions one by one. For developers, the new API opens up ways to hook team and membership management into existing IT user administration systems such as Active Directory or LDAP.
The new Dropbox for Business API surface covers the full lifecycle of a group:
- List existing groups.
- Create or delete groups.
- Add or remove members from a group.
- Update the access type of a group member.
Beyond the basic create-and-remove operations, the endpoints let you manage member access permissions directly through the API. A beta of the Groups API has already been exercised by several SSO and DLP providers who are building integrations on top of it, and Dropbox expects that base to grow as the feature reaches general availability.
