GitHub Satellite Goes Virtual With a Full Day of Talks, Workshops, and Code-Powered Music

GitHub Satellite is moving fully online this year, streaming from githubsatellite.com on May 6 starting at 9 am PT / 12 pm ET / 6 pm CET. The event spans two live stream tracks—one focused on work and one on play—running for 12 hours. All sessions will be available on demand if you can't watch live.

The main event is free, and the schedule includes a keynote, product talks, team protips, and live musical performances. For those wanting a more hands-on experience, GitHub is offering two paid workshops on May 7 for $50, with all proceeds going to COVID-19 response efforts. Speakers to Watch

The satellite lineup spans infrastructure security, hardware testing, and algorithmic music. Here's a preview of a few sessions and what the speakers hope attendees will take away.

Luca Cipriani, CIO of Arduino

Cipriani's work-track session, "Bring time back on your side with GitHub Actions," is about automating software and hardware testing. His most valuable piece of advice for fellow engineers? "Read the logs, Luke!" A fun fact: he goes by the nickname mastrolinux but now runs Windows 10 after 17 years on Linux, noting, "Indeed Windows is now the best Linux distro out there!"

Ivan Pashchenko, University of Trento

In "Dependency hell or developers' perception of software dependencies," Pashchenko will focus on improving the security of your project's dependencies. "I want to spread the word about my work in security of software dependencies, especially since vulnerabilities introduced by dependencies have already led to many severe security breaches."

Maya Kaczorowski, GitHub

Kaczorowski's talk, "Securing the software supply chain together," emphasizes patching vulnerabilities in your own code. As she puts it, "It's your responsibility to better understand and protect what you're consuming in your code—as a developer, make sure to patch patch patch!"

Alexandra Cardenas, Live Coder

Cardenas describes code as the best medium for expressing her musical ideas. She's performing a live coding session on the play track and recently released an album, HIPERSONICA.

Sam Aaron, DJ and CEO of Sonic Pi Limited

Aaron will drop a live DJ set on the play track. His broader mission: "We should be using our magical developer skills to lower the barriers to entry for a creative experience with code for everyone."
