Make Any File a Template Using This Hidden macOS Tool

If you regularly reuse document templates on your Mac, a long-standing Finder feature called Stationery Pad can trim a step from your workflow. The tool tells a file’s parent application to open a fresh copy by default, so the source file stays untouched.

The trick works across file types—including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—not just documents. To use it, select the file, press CMD+i, or right-click and choose “Get info.” Then enable the Stationery Pad checkbox in the info panel.
