Game Off 2025: The Top Ten Waves

GitHub's annual game jam, Game Off, returned for its 13th edition with the theme "WAVES." Developers worldwide built and shared source code for games around that single concept. The result was over 700 submissions, from which participants themselves rated and reviewed the top ten. The winners explore waves as ocean physics, light, sound, emotion, and even pure chaos.

1. Evaw

Platform: Godot

Evaw is a moody platformer where light and sound waves, alongside poetic radio transmissions, guide players through the ruins of a fallen nation. The game asks you to bend physics, unlock paths, and slowly realize the world is listening back. Features include adjustable difficulty, hidden secrets, and a speedrun timer.

2. Where the Water Flows

Platform: Godot

This isometric puzzle adventure makes water levels the core level design mechanic. Players raise or lower the sea level to reveal paths, with puzzles rewarding observation over reflexes. The serene visuals and smart pacing create a calm, meditative experience.

3. BEACON

Platform: Unity

You are a glowing slug lost in a dark, abandoned world. BEACON uses light waves to reveal paths, secrets, and missing friends across short, atmospheric puzzles. The game rewards curiosity and patience rather than button mashing, creating a quiet, cozy tone.

4. A Kingdom Slightly Out Of Tune

Platform: Unity

This puzzle-strategy mashup treats sound waves as weapons. Matching colors triggers musical shockwaves, requiring players to slide tiles, chain colors, and remix upgrades to blast enemies back into harmony. The result is cute art with punchy audio and screen-clearing combos.

5. Wave Drifter

Platform: Godot

Peaceful sailing is not an option here. Wave Drifter delivers high-speed naval chases where drifting is mandatory and ramming is encouraged. Players boost, blast, collect purple orbs, and stack upgrades to turn their ship into a floating menace to the royal navy. Simple controls and busted builds fuel "one more run" energy.

6. Tidal Town

Platform: Godot

City planning meets divine disaster in Tidal Town. Players slide buildings into color groups to score points and calm a displeased Poseidon. The game is easy to learn but tactical, as waves constantly reshape the board. Bright visuals and smooth play accompany the chaotic city management.

7. Froggy Love

Platform: Unity

A cozy ripple-physics puzzle where players guide a lovestruck frog across a pond using carefully placed splashes. Three handcrafted levels turn wave timing into romance logistics. Snakes are the enemy, and vibes are the goal.

8. Ooqo

Platform: Godot

Ooqo is an arcade score-chaser where movement becomes rhythm. Players glide across fish to survive, chain combos to build momentum, and avoid stepping in the wrong spots. The simple rules, hypnotic soundtrack, and leaderboard create a deep flow state.

9. La Ola

Platform: Godot

Instead of endless running, La Ola offers endless typing. It turns the stadium "wave" into a typing gauntlet where your words-per-minute keeps the crowd's spirit alive. Missed letters put the audience to sleep; a missed space collapses the wave. Procedurally generated text is powered by Markov Chains, making for a brutally honest test of keyboard skills.

10. The Last Wave

Platform: Unity

A haunting mystery where waves carry memory, grief, and identity. Players work alongside Saja, Korea's grim reaper, to reconstruct the lives lost in a fatal fire by matching names, locations, and overlapping wave signals. Inspired by Return of the Obra Dinn, this title is thoughtful, culturally grounded, and quietly devastating.
