WHO Engineers Discuss Pandemic Tech at GitHub Universe
Earlier this year, GitHub's May Satellite event touched on how COVID-19 disrupted social sector organizations and communities, covering economic, societal, and pandemic impacts through the lens of open source. Now, GitHub is bringing public health engineers back for a deeper look at how technology is being built to fight the current crisis and future ones.
On Thursday, December 10 at 10 am PT, a GitHub Universe panel will feature direct insight from the World Health Organization's technical team. Joining GitHub's Senior Program Manager for Tech for Social Good, Mala Kumar, will be Dušan Milovanović, Lead Architect in Public Health Intelligence at WHO, and Sara Hollis, an Epidemiologist in the Health Emergencies Programme. GitHub Solution Architect Bassem Dghaidi will also participate.
The discussion will walk through the past, present, and future of several key WHO initiatives focusing on early detection, verification, and risk assessment of pandemics, including COVID-19. Given that the current crisis has proven that no single country or organization can tackle pandemics alone, the panel will emphasize how cross-border collaboration in public health relies on modern, open source technology solutions.
The session aims to show how attendees—whether representing organizations, communities, or as individuals—can contribute to specific open source WHO projects.
