Front-End Predictions for 2022: A Look at Jay Freestone’s Forecast

Last year, Jay Freestone’s front-end predictions held up remarkably well. His wide-angle view of the ecosystem—covering tooling, architecture, and browser tech—proved accurate on several fronts. React frameworks like Next and Gatsby achieved stability and market traction, while newcomers like Remix and Astro found success by embracing the React ecosystem. Container queries moved from proposal to implementation, with multiple browsers shipping support and polyfills easing adoption. WASM remained a topic of high interest, even if adoption stayed niche. And while Jamstack continued to grow, the major platforms (Netlify, Vercel, DigitalOcean, AWS Amplify, Azure Static Web Apps) increasingly pulled APIs, serverless functions, and other services under one roof—blurring the line between decoupled architectures and traditional monoliths.

Jay’s own addendum to last year’s list, the inert attribute, saw partial progress. Safari became the first mover on it, though widespread shipping hasn’t materialized yet.

Jay’s Predictions for 2022

Jay’s 2022 list covers four distinct areas, each with varying degrees of certainty.

Micro-Frontends

Jay is on the fence about micro-frontends, and I share that hesitation. The technical case isn’t immediately clear—at least without concrete examples. But from an organizational perspective, the approach seems questionable from the start. Coordinating multiple teams is difficult, but splitting their responsibilities and technical depth into silos doesn’t obviously lead to better sites or healthier collaboration.

The Death of Jamstack (as a Term)

The "death of Jamstack" isn’t about the architecture—it’s about the label itself. The term has grown so overloaded that it’s losing usefulness. Jay expects the confusion and fatigue to culminate in a gradual retreat from the word in 2022. That resonates; even referring to it in this context feels awkward now. The underlying patterns aren’t going away, but the name may be on its way out.

Progressive Enhancement

Jay points to frameworks generating functional, server-rendered sites that don’t depend on client-side JavaScript. This is a major trend with positive ripple effects. Progressive enhancement—building interactive components that degrade gracefully when JavaScript or other technologies fail—hasn’t historically seen much growth in popularity. If frameworks make it the default rather than an afterthought, that would be a meaningful shift.

Functional JavaScript

Functional JavaScript is a wild card pick, but a plausible one. It’s hard to opine on definitively, but it fits Jay’s track record of spotting emerging currents in the front-end landscape.
