A Cross-Vendor Effort to Keep Web Platform Docs Healthy
Documentation for web platform technologies is a critical piece of shared infrastructure, yet it often depends on the goodwill and resources of a single organization. A new collective, Open Web Docs, has launched to address that fragility with backing from Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Coil, W3C, Samsung, and Igalia.
The group is not building a new documentation site. Instead, its stated mission is to support a community of technical writers focused on the strategic creation and long-term maintenance of web platform documentation. Its current priority is contributing to MDN Web Docs, the de facto standard reference for web developers. By working with existing platforms rather than competing with them, Open Web Docs aims to ensure the health of those resources independently of any single vendor's budget or roadmap.
The collective plans to operate through full-time staff, community management, and a network of partner organizations. This structure is meant to give core web platform documentation a sustainable base of support, helping it keep pace with the evolution of the technologies it describes.
