Why Script Files Are the Bottleneck in Localization

Localizing a title for global audiences is a creative process as much as a technical one. Whether a viewer watches with dubbed audio, subtitles, closed captions, or forced narratives, preserving the original creative intent in every language demands precise handling of dialogue, timing, and context. The journey from a finished master to a performed dub or a readable subtitle runs through a chain of specialized tools, each needing the same core information: the dialogue, its timecodes, character annotations, and notes that guide translation and adaptation.

Script files are the currency of that exchange. They travel through transcription, translation, and adaptation before voice artists or subtitling teams ever use them. But today those files arrive at Netflix in many incompatible forms: Microsoft Word documents, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, Rich Text files, and more. While they all carry essential dialogue and metadata, the lack of a consistent, structured format has made it impossible to build efficient workflows around them.

Introducing Timed Text Authoring Lineage

To close that gap, Netflix has developed the Timed Text Authoring Lineage (TTAL) specification, designed to let script authoring and prompting tools exchange files cleanly through the localization pipeline. A single TTAL file captures all the relevant details: script type, dialogue, timecodes, metadata, source-language text, transcribed text, and language identifiers.

The name maps directly onto the specification’s purpose. Timed Text means the format carries dialogue together with its corresponding timecodes. Authoring signals that the format exists for creating dubbing and subtitling scripts, not just delivering final files. Lineage reflects the way a script evolves from the original production language through translation until it is performed or subtitled in another language.

The Authoring Workflow

The format defines the vocabulary and annotations needed to model timed text, making it easier for the localization pipeline to capture, store, and share materials. Netflix has piloted both authoring and exchange of TTAL scripts with its technology and English dubbing partners. The workflow delivers adapted scripts before recording sessions and again once recording is complete, giving partners the ability to supply more accurate scripts at the moments they matter most.

Tooling Support

JSON is the underlying format for TTAL, which allowed Netflix to work directly with dubbing technology providers to build its support into their products. Several third-party tools already offer TTAL import and export:

  • VoiceQ — version 4.7.2 and above
  • Mosaic — version 2.0
  • ADR Master 2
  • Nuendo — a Netflix Production Technology Alliance partner product currently being updated to include TTAL support

Feedback from these early adopters has already led to revisions of the specification.

What the Format Unlocks

When tools across the ecosystem adopt a unified script format, localization pipelines become more predictable. Consistent structure means scripts can be parsed automatically and leveraged at scale, enabling better interoperability between prompters, editors, and recording systems. Netflix sees this as a path toward reducing the operational complexity around script delivery, allowing the production chain to spend creative energy on translation quality rather than file conversion and reformatting.

An Evolving Specification

TTAL is not finished. Netflix is collaborating with localization partners and tool developers to continue maturing the format, with the expectation that wider adoption will surface new requirements.
