Enterprise administration gets a management overhaul

GitHub Enterprise owners now have more direct control over the accounts and organizations under their purview. Several new tools have landed in public beta, alongside a round of UI and workflow improvements that simplify day-to-day administration.

New role and membership controls

The headline additions give enterprise owners authority they previously lacked. One new beta feature lets an enterprise owner assume organization ownership, enabling them to audit the organization, apply policies and security controls, and ensure that no organization is left without an owner. This role is managed through the enterprise account settings.

The second beta feature is the ability to remove a member from the enterprise entirely. This revocation, which strips membership from every organization within the enterprise, can be carried out directly from the enterprise account settings. Critically, it does not require an identity provider (IdP) connection to the enterprise account.

Usability fixes across the account surface

Beyond the beta features, GitHub has shipped several quality-of-life changes that touch common administrative tasks:

  • The enterprise account's Organizations page has moved from a tile-based layout to searchable rows with filters based on organization roles.
  • Organization members can now see who the enterprise owners are via the People page within any organization in the enterprise.
  • Organizations can be transferred into or out of an enterprise account as needed.
  • Existing invoice-based enterprise organizations can be upgraded directly into an enterprise account.

What's coming next

GitHub is also refreshing the enterprise account People pages, with a focus on making them more user-friendly and informative. As part of that update, administrators will gain the ability to export a full enterprise user report. These changes aim to shore up the administrative experience so that large organizations can scale their operations with less friction. GitHub Enterprise is available for a free trial, and setup guidance is provided in the official documentation.
