Ramadan's Daily Rhythm Shows Up in Global Internet Traffic

Ramadan imposes a distinct daily rhythm on hundreds of millions of people: no food or drink from dawn to sunset, with meals shifted to the pre-dawn Suhur and post-sunset Iftar. That shift in human behavior is visible in internet traffic data from Cloudflare Radar. In countries with large Muslim populations, the change is pronounced enough that you can identify sunset in the charts. The effects are clearest in the hours just before sunrise and immediately after sunset, when activity spikes or drops well outside normal patterns.

All times referenced below are local, and traffic data is bucketed into one-hour increments. A spike at 04:00, for example, means increased traffic occurred between 04:00 and 04:59 local time.

How Ramadan shows up in Internet trends

Pre-Dawn Traffic Surges as People Wake for Suhur

For many, the 04:00–04:59 hour is typically the lowest traffic point of the day. During Ramadan, however, this period saw dramatic increases in countries where people wake early to eat before sunrise. Cloudflare's country-by-country analysis shows the largest pre-dawn spikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, Libya and Turkey.

The numbers are striking. In Pakistan, traffic during the 04:00–04:59 hour on Sunday, April 3 was 119% higher than the previous Sunday. Afghanistan saw a 203% spike in the same window. In Indonesia, where sunrise in early April was at 05:55, traffic in that hour grew 98%. Libya, where sunrise came at 06:54, recorded an 81% increase at 04:00–04:59 compared with the prior Sunday. Saudi Arabia, with sunrise at 05:44 on April 3, showed 55% more usage in that same hour.

The pattern held across regions. Qatar saw a 35% spike (sunrise at 05:25), and North African nations including Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco all showed the same early-morning bump. Turkey and the United Arab Emirates exhibited similar trends, with the UAE showing notably higher mobile usage during the pre-dawn meal period. In Libya, the typical daily low point shifted from the 04:00 hour to 08:00 during Ramadan.

Total Daily Traffic: Up in Some Countries, Down in Others

While the sunrise and sunset effects are consistent, the overall 30-day trend during Ramadan varied by country. Iran generally experienced increased traffic after Ramadan began on April 2, and a decrease of roughly 15% after it ended on May 3.

Pakistan showed the opposite pattern: a general decline in traffic the week after Ramadan, but with a notable exception. During the 18:00–18:59 hour on Wednesday, May 4 — when Iftar would have occurred during Ramadan — traffic was 13% higher than the previous Wednesday.

In Libya, traffic generally declined during Ramadan and recovered afterward. Comparing Wednesday, May 4 with the prior Wednesday during the 19:00–19:59 hour, traffic jumped about 48%. Morocco saw a similar post-Ramadan rebound of 44% in the same period.

Post-Sunset Patterns Reverse When the Fast Ends

After Ramadan concluded and the Eid al-Fitr holiday (May 2–3) passed, the evening traffic pattern reversed in most affected countries. Where Iftar had caused a noticeable drop in traffic right after sunset, the post-Ramadan period generally saw increased traffic around 18:00 or 19:00.

Of the 16 countries most impacted by Ramadan, only four — Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia — showed decreased traffic after sunset on May 4. All four had gained daily traffic during Ramadan and lost it after the month ended. Indonesia provides a clear illustration: the post-Ramadan charts show both an overall decline in traffic and the disappearance of the sharp evening dip that marked the Iftar period during the fast.

Ramadan's impact on internet usage is a reminder that beneath the automated traffic from bots and services, the network still fundamentally reflects human schedules and habits. When people change their daily routines, the traffic data follows.
