Cloudflare’s Green Compute Reaches Open Beta
Cloudflare is expanding its sustainability toolkit for developers. The company has announced that Green Compute is now available in open beta, bringing its renewable-energy routing to all developers after a period of limited testing.
Making Cron Triggers Greener
Green Compute is a feature for Workers Cron Triggers. When enabled, it ensures that scheduled tasks run only on Cloudflare points of presence (PoPs) located in data centers that are powered entirely by renewable energy. The goal is to drive demand for cleaner energy sources and encourage more facilities to adopt responsible energy policies.
Cloudflare notes that, from an accounting perspective, its entire network is already considered 100% renewable-powered. This is because the company purchases renewable energy credits equivalent to its global energy consumption. However, the physical reality is more nuanced. Cloudflare operates its servers inside co-location facilities that also house equipment from other companies. While Cloudflare’s own purchases cover the electricity its hardware draws, the rest of the energy consumed at those facilities may come from non-renewable sources.
Renewable energy can be sourced through several channels:
- On-site generation, such as wind turbines and solar panels.
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy producers.
- Renewable Energy Credits (RECs, IRECs, GoOs) purchased from energy credit markets.
By restricting Cron Trigger execution to facilities with verified renewable energy, Green Compute offers a more granular level of control for developers who want to minimize their carbon footprint.
Enabling Green Compute
To turn on the feature, developers can navigate to their Workers app, open Change Setting under Compute Setting, and select Green Compute.
Once enabled, any scheduled workload will display a leaf icon, indicating that the job will execute at a renewable-powered data center. The setting requires just a single click, and Cloudflare is inviting developers to provide feedback through its Discord community.
The company positions Green Compute as one part of a broader environmental commitment. It has several initiatives underway, including:
- A commitment to 100% renewable energy for its network.
- Carbon Impact Reports that give customers visibility into their Scope 3 emissions.
- Crawler Hints, a feature that reduces the environmental impact of web searches by limiting unnecessary crawling.
- Annual Impact Reports and emissions inventories.
