Open Source Takes Center Stage in October

October marks a significant period for the open source community, with the Hacktoberfest festival now in its seventh year encouraging developers to contribute to projects on GitHub. The initiative focuses on repositories tagged with the Hacktoberfest topic, and the Brazilian developer community has shown notable engagement in a variety of ways.

Developers have been pushing thousands of lines of code to GitHub daily, while major Brazilian companies have launched their own spin-off events, such as https://opensource.globo.com/hacktoberfest/. University students have also gotten involved, gathering to celebrate and contribute both code and ideas. In one recent example, Campus Expert Otacílio Maia organized Hacktoberfest Recife, an event featuring talks and workshops designed to help developers make their first open source contribution.

October also brings the return of GitHub ¡Presente!, a monthly online event held entirely in Portuguese. This edition highlights the Egua language, a programming language created entirely in Portuguese by students from Belém do Pará. The Linguagem Egua repository is participating in this year's Hacktoberfest.

The upcoming GitHub ¡Presente! session is free and scheduled for October 27 at 18:00 (Brasília time). The roster of speakers includes:

  • Thayana Corrêa Mamoré: A front end developer with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from Estácio-IESAM. A passionate open source advocate and WebXR enthusiast, she is part of the core team for AR.js Studio and helps organize the Vue.js Norte community in Belém do Pará.
  • Hernandes: An instructor and speaker with interests spanning programming, Linux, beer, and history.
  • Lucas Pompeu Neves: A computer engineering student and creator of the Egua language, who now leads its ongoing development while working as an intern at Stefanini Brasil.
  • André Eleutério: A Security Researcher at GitHub.
  • Ruy Adorno: An Engineer on the npm CLI team at GitHub.
