GitHub Sponsors Opens to Brazilian Developers
GitHub has expanded its Sponsors program to Brazil, opening the funding platform to one of its fastest-growing developer communities. Developers who had previously joined the waitlist are now onboarded, and anyone with a Brazilian bank account can create a Sponsors profile to start receiving contributions.
The move follows the launch of GitHub Sponsors in India and is part of the company's push to extend financial support infrastructure across the global open source ecosystem. Brazil is home to more than 2 million GitHub developers, with year-over-year community growth exceeding 40%. Tens of thousands of those developers are active open source contributors.
The expansion also lands against a backdrop of broader platform momentum: GitHub reports that 10 million new developers joined in the last six months alone.
Celebrating the Launch
To mark the launch, GitHub is hosting a virtual meetup on June 2 at 6 pm BRT, where local maintainers will discuss open source maintenance and offer tips for setting up a Sponsors profile. The following day, GitHub will appear at the TDC Innovations conference to talk about Sponsors, security tooling, and related developer tools.
The company notes that further expansion and refinement of the Sponsors experience is on the roadmap as it continues to improve support for open source developers worldwide.
