Genyokan Trip: A Weekend of New Techniques and Old Friends
A recent weekend at the Genyokan proved both demanding and rewarding, leaving this writer sore—and with a twisted toe from the wrestling mats—but rich in new knowledge. The event introduced a broad range of unfamiliar material, including an all-direction step-in-thrust, a rotating takedown from a side strike, and an opposite-hand version of the fourth-kyu 180-degree pivot shuffle cross-step-under initiation. Study also covered koryu buki and calligraphy practice. Although the demonstration itself went well, only part of the planned six-technique set was performed.
A pleasant surprise was the presence of David-sensei and several other friends from the Portland club. Working alongside them for the three days felt like a reunion, as they are missed in the current location. There is already anticipation for a return in the summer to resume classes with that group.
Having recovered from illness, it was good to return to the full schedule of three classes, followed by conditioning the next day. Work has begun on jump-backs with Nik and Sophie, as well as jumping over a partner. The movements are difficult, but there is hope they will become easier with continued practice.
