Dropbox Hosts Its First Community Hack Night
Dropbox opened its offices to more than 30 local developers last week for the company's first hack night. The event kicked off with a walkthrough of the latest Dropbox APIs, with members of the API team on hand to answer questions while attendees worked through the evening on Red Bull and pizza.
Several startups used the occasion to begin integrating Dropbox into their products. Three projects stood out enough to earn recognition from the organizers:
- Hackpad, a collaborative wiki editor, built a feature that lets users link to files stored in Dropbox and reference them directly inside a pad.
- Trove, which aggregates digital content through a single API, added the ability to export images from various websites straight to Dropbox.
- Spool, a service for saving articles, images, PDFs, and other content for later viewing on mobile devices, made it possible to pull files from Dropbox into a user's Spool queue.
Beyond the projects themselves, the Dropbox team gathered a range of new ideas and useful feedback to help steer future API development. Updates on upcoming events and API news will be posted on the developers site and the @dropboxapi Twitter account.
