Stripe Brings Crypto Rails to Connect Payouts
Getting paid internationally remains a stubborn problem for creators and independent workers, even as the tools for finding an audience have gone global. Stripe's Connect platform already lets businesses send programmatic payouts to recipients in over 70 countries in local currencies. But many markets are still unreachable through traditional banking infrastructure, and the complexity of supporting heterogeneous local payments systems has kept those gaps open.
Stripe has long seen cryptocurrency's promise as less about store of value and more about creating open-access financial rails. Today that vision takes a concrete step forward with the introduction of crypto payouts for Connect. Twitter, Stripe's first partner in this effort, will offer a select group of creators the option to receive earnings from monetization products like Ticketed Spaces and Super Follows directly to a cryptocurrency wallet.
Twitter Pilot: Stablecoin Payouts Without the Crypto Overhead
Twitter already uses Connect to pay creators from its monetization products. With crypto payouts enabled, creators who opt in will have their earnings sent to a crypto wallet while Stripe handles all crypto-related operations behind the scenes. Platforms gain the capability to pay out in crypto without acquiring, storing, or transferring digital assets themselves—no code changes required.
Initially, Stripe will support payouts in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin that lets recipients hold dollar value even outside traditional dollar banking systems. Payouts travel over the Polygon network, chosen for its low fees, speed, compatibility with Ethereum, and support across popular wallets including MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Rainbow. Creators can hold USDC on Polygon or bridge to Ethereum to exchange into other currencies. Additional rails and payout currencies are planned for later.
Built on Existing Connect Infrastructure
Crypto payouts are an extension of standard Connect functionality. When a creator opts for crypto payment, they go through Stripe's normal onboarding and KYC flows, which dynamically adapt as cryptocurrency regulations evolve. Recipients manage account details, track earnings, and view upcoming payouts through the Stripe Express app—the same experience they'd have with any other payout method.
Expanding the Global Payments and Treasury Network
The launch extends Stripe's Global Payments and Treasury Network (GPTN)—its infrastructure for global, programmable money movement—beyond traditional rails. By the end of the year, Stripe plans to support crypto payouts in more than 120 countries. Platforms interested in early access can request beta access, with broader availability rolling out in the coming months.
