NetFX: Netflix’s Cloud Platform for Global VFX Collaboration
Netflix has announced NetFX, a cloud-based platform designed to streamline how visual effects (VFX) vendors, artists, and creators collaborate on its original content. The platform aims to give partners direct access to the infrastructure needed to meet the company’s growing demand for VFX services worldwide.
Visual effects touch nearly every Netflix feature and series, from complex creature and environment work to straightforward object and background removal. NetFX consolidates the tools for that work into a single connected environment, offering virtual workstations, integrated storage, and full access to secure rendering. This setup is intended to let the company scale its VFX operations and iterate more quickly, while vendors contribute artist resources on demand and individual artists participate as needed.
Working Virtually
A key aspect of NetFX is that all production can occur safely within a virtual environment—a benefit that has become increasingly important during the global pandemic. The platform also opens the door to collaborators with diverse backgrounds and experiences, supporting creative work across Netflix’s broad slate of international titles.
Rollout and Availability
A beta version of NetFX is already in use in Canada with partners Frontier VFX and Galavant VFX. By early 2021, Netflix plans to extend the platform to Mumbai through a partnership with Anibrain, with additional regions to follow as infrastructure can be deployed.
