Email Routing opens up to everyone

Cloudflare Email Routing has moved from closed beta to open beta. That means the waitlist is gone: every zone in every Cloudflare account — including free zones — can now use the service to create custom email addresses without running separate mailboxes.

To enable it, open a zone in the Cloudflare Dashboard and select Email in the navigation pane. There is no signup flow beyond that.

Email Routing is now in open beta, available to everyone

From internal tool to public service

Email Routing was introduced during Cloudflare’s Birthday Week in September 2021, and the team had been running it internally well before the product had a user interface. After the announcement, access was granted gradually to customers on the waitlist — at first a few users per week, then at a faster pace as edge cases were found and fixed.

The ramp-up accelerated considerably when demand spiked from two directions: users wanting to add Email Routing to more of their own domains, and G Suite legacy users looking for a no-subscription alternative. At peak, tens of thousands of new zones were being onboarded each day during the closed beta.

Operating at that scale surfaced real-world edge cases and some limitations — a couple of which remain documented in the known limitations list. Notably, the service does not currently support Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) or subdomains.

Known limitations and next steps

With hundreds of thousands of zones now in the beta, Cloudflare says the feedback and usage patterns gave it enough confidence to move to the next stage without restricting access. Existing documentation covers migration guidance for moving from another provider, and support channels remain open on the Cloudflare Community and the Cloudflare Discord server.
