First Impressions: Moving to the D70
Shifting to the D70 marks a notable change in feel and handling compared to the 4500. The differences stem not just from the body itself, but also from adopting a RAW-based workflow. Images captured with the new camera come across as more layered, wider in scope, and more nuanced than before. The vivid, punchy colors that suited the 4500 no longer seem appropriate for the more carefully processed shots, even when the histogram shows a balanced distribution of levels.
So far, the toolchain of F-Spot, UFRaw, and the Gimp has handled the job well, though it remains unfamiliar territory. Anticipating how a specific parameter set will alter the RAW data is still tricky, and mastering that forecast will take time. Nailing color accuracy, in particular, remains a demanding challenge.
