October Wallpapers: Autumn and Halloween Designs for Your Desktop

October has arrived, bringing with it rich autumn colors and the approach of Halloween. To mark the occasion, artists and designers have contributed a fresh set of desktop wallpapers, each available in versions with and without an October 2024 calendar. Every design can be downloaded for free.

These submissions are part of the ongoing monthly community challenge, now in its thirteenth year. Alongside the new work, this collection also highlights past favorites from the wallpaper archives. All artists retain full creative freedom, with themes and concepts developed independently rather than assigned.

Each wallpaper preview can be clicked to view a larger version, and designers interested in participating in a future collection are invited to submit their own work through the project page.

Reptile Awareness Day

October 21 is Reptile Awareness Day, a reminder that these often-misunderstood animals play an essential role in their ecosystems. Many reptile species around the world are under pressure from habitat loss and other threats, so the day is also an opportunity to learn more about them and what can be done to protect them. This month’s wallpaper, from PopArt Studio in Serbia, captures the spirit of conservation with a warm illustration of some familiar reptiles.

The design is available in a wide range of screen resolutions, and in two versions: one with a monthly calendar and one clean version without.

Make Today A Good Day

A reminder doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. This month’s motivational entry, designed by Hitesh Puri from Delhi, India, takes that principle to heart with the message “Make today a good day.” It’s a short statement about owning the present moment, and a nudge to remember that our choices and attitudes are what ultimately shape the day ahead.

Puri’s design pairs the clean typography of the message with a colorful, illustrative background that carries a peaceful mood. As with the other wallpapers in this collection, it can be downloaded with or without an October calendar.

Color and Science for the Season

Two designs in this set draw on nature’s more colorful displays. From Farhan Srambiyan in India, “Autumn’s Splendor” leans into the season’s warm palette. The artist notes that the shift into fall brings “a rich visual tapestry of warm colors and falling leaves,” a “natural choice for a wallpaper theme.” The no-calendar version is offered in resolutions from 1280x960 to 2560x1440.

This design’s no-calendar downloads are more granular, featuring various aspect ratios from 320x480 up to 2560x1440, including specific tablet dimensions like 1024x768 and square options.

Personal Tributes and Migrations

Hungarian designer Lívi Lénárt offers “Magical October,” a piece quoting Anne of Green Gables: “‘I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.’” This design maintains a broader selection of sizes without a calendar, ranging across common desktop and mobile aspect ratios.

Magical October

For Eline Claeys from Belgium, the season is a time of departure. Her design, “Bird Migration Portal,” stems from a childhood memory of swallows leaving their nests and flying south. “As a child, I dreamt that they all flew together to a nicer place, where they were not so cold,” she explains. The no-calendar files for this piece come as JPGs, from 1280x1024 to 2560x1440.

A Note on Cultural Seasons

Design inspiration can also come from traditional seasonal markers. Hong, ZI-Qing from Taiwan created “Hanlu,” explaining: “The term ‘Hanlu’ literally translates as ‘Cold Dew.’ The cold dew brings brisk mornings and evenings. Eventually the briskness will turn cold, as winter is coming soon. And chrysanthemum is the iconic flower of Cold Dew.”

PopArt Studio from Serbia centers its design on the Slavic figure "Goddess Makosh" the patron of fields and crops. First Scarf And The Beach

Gwen Bogaert looks back on childhood trips to the beach in Nieuwpoort. Design and copy are joined: as the sky turned gray and the days grew colder, family walks in the wind became an October ritual. The designer describes the Dutch concept of "uitwaaien" — walking in the wind to clear your head and relieve stress.

Roger That Rogue Rover

Frank Candamil confronts a haunting sci-fi premise: a Mars rover that meets unknown Martian material and becomes "infected." The narrative turns the rover's mission inside out, moving from research and exploration to chaos and mischief. The design raises a provocative question — if rovers ran rogue on Mars, would humans ever dare to voyage to the red planet?
