CO2, or, Fighting the Man

Engineering

The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) has released a pair of television spots championing carbon dioxide, complete with the slogan, "Carbon dioxide. They call it pollution. We call it life." A fitting response for the group's members would be to hold their breath indefinitely in service of that precious life.

The ads are hardly surprising, given CEI's funding sources. The Clean Air Trust has tied Shell, GM, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler to the group as contributors. ExxonMobil alone, according to its own public policy document, donated $405,000 to CEI in 2002 — the largest single gift listed under the company's public information and policy research contributions.
