Seven Innovation Weeks, One Mission

Cloudflare's approach to product announcements differs from the typical annual conference model. Instead, the company runs multiple Innovation Weeks throughout the year, each dedicated to a specific technology area. In 2021, seven such weeks took place, covering everything from security to developer tools to corporate network transformation.

Cloudflare Innovation Weeks 2021

Security First

The year opened with Security Week in March, focused on making enterprise-grade protection available to organizations of all sizes. The week's announcements included a more secure and cost-effective alternative to MPLS for connecting offices and data centers, general availability of remote browser isolation technology, and Page Shield for defending against malicious code injection.

Cloudflare also inverted the traditional data loss prevention model by building zero trust controls into the Cloudflare One suite. The week wrapped up with democratizing access to bot-fighting technology and expanding solutions for API-specific threats.

Developer Experience Takes Center Stage

April's Developer Week centered on simplifying the lives of developers. Cloudflare Pages reached general availability, WebSocket support was introduced in Workers, and Workers Unbound removed limits on CPU time. The company also made Tunnels free and partnered with Nvidia to bring AI to the edge.

The week introduced the first Developer Challenge series, with daily skill-building exercises and solutions revealed on subsequent days.

Measuring Impact

July saw the first Impact Week, which examined the company's environmental, social, and governance efforts. Project Pangea launched as a free program to provide reliable Internet access for community networks serving under-served populations. Cloudflare also detailed its commitment to a greener Internet through efficiency measures, renewable energy, and allowing developers to run workloads in the most energy-efficient data centers. The company published its first human rights policy during this week.

A Focus on Performance

Speed Week in September made the case for the network's performance, with benchmarks on edge network speed, Workers, and Pages. The network itself was expanded to reduce proximity to users. Two performance features launched: Signed Exchanges, which reduces load times and improves SEO rankings with one click, and Early Hints, which can cut loading times by 30 percent.

Cloudflare Images also debuted as a solution for storing, resizing, optimizing, and serving images through a scalable and affordable pipeline. Later the same month, Birthday Week marked the company's 11th anniversary with Cloudflare R2, object-based storage without egress fees. Other announcements covered defenses against email spoofing and expansion of the network into office buildings.

Full Stack Vision

Full Stack Week in November put forward the idea that the network is the computer, allowing developers to build entire applications exclusively on Cloudflare's infrastructure. Key announcements were the general availability of Durable Objects, the ability to connect to databases, and partnerships with MongoDB and Prisma. Cloudflare Pages added support for seamless function deployment, and the wrangler CLI received a new version. Worker Services offered a new way for teams to build, while support for the Stripe SDK enabled monetization on the platform.

Closing with CIO Week

The year concluded with CIO Week in December, which showcased Cloudflare One as a Zero Trust Network-as-a-Service for corporate network transformation. New capabilities allowed customers to replace hardware firewalls, store logs on R2, and use a new premium DNS offering. Cloudflare Security Center helped customers map attack surfaces and mitigate risks with a few clicks. The week also marked the acquisition of Zaraz, aimed at boosting website speed and security without sacrificing privacy, alongside partnerships with Microsoft and leading cyber insurance providers.
