A Biology-Inspired Library Rises From a Marsh
CELL, a library concept built in Minecraft, deliberately inverts the conventions of book conservation. Its design leans into the transient, mutable spirit of cellular biology rather than permanence and order.
Readers arrive by boat, docking at one of four landings modeled on alpha-hemolysin complexes. The building sits at the center of a marsh, which stands in for the intercellular matrix.

The structure rests on cobblestone pilings that function as microtubules, transitioning into sandstone columns above. Its floor plan is roughly circular—an efficient shape maximizing enclosed volume relative to surface area. In the vertical plane, the second floor steps inward, capped by a Roman-style dome with an open annulus.

That dome dominates the nucleus, where rainfall from the annulus gathers in a pool below. Two helical staircases intertwine, an architectural nod to the double-helix structure of DNA.


Surrounding quadrants cater to distinct functions, ranging from enclosed reading spaces to open-air gathering spots.



The stacks twist in convolutions that mirror the endoplasmic reticulum:

Oriented east-west, the library opens to full glass on its second floor, offering expansive views at night, both from inside and from the roof garden above.
