First cohort of GitHub Open Source Grants announced for India
GitHub has announced the first 15 recipients of its Open Source Grants program in India, part of a one crore (10 million) Indian rupee commitment to fund open source maintainers and contributors in the country. The program was first introduced at GitHub Satellite India 2021.
The grants recognize developers working across a range of projects, from developer tools to COVID-19 related initiatives. According to GitHub, applications came in from developers across 81 cities and 19 states in India.
The recipients are: liyasthomas, anuraghazra, pranshuchittora, VishalNehra, bodhish, shivammathur, ahiliation, onprem, ptrthomas, akshay2211, snitin315, anikethsaha, shikhamis11, gautamkrishnar, and gdsoumya.
GitHub Sponsors opening up in India
In a related move, GitHub is beginning to roll out GitHub Sponsors to an initial group of developers in India, which includes the grant recipients. The early access group will provide feedback that GitHub says will help shape the experience before a wider rollout in the country.
GitHub Sponsors lets users financially support the maintainers and contributors behind the open source projects they depend on. The company frames both programs as part of a broader effort to build a sustainable funding model for open source development in India.
