GitHub sets up an India subsidiary
GitHub has announced the formation of GitHub India Private Limited, a local subsidiary of GitHub, Inc. The move is aimed at supporting one of the company's largest and fastest-growing developer communities. India currently ranks third globally in the number of active GitHub developers, with a 22 percent increase over the past year.
Maneesh Sharma has been appointed General Manager of GitHub India and will lead the subsidiary's growth strategy. Over the coming months, the company plans to build a full local team spanning community, engineering, sales, support, marketing, and services. The goal is to help Indian enterprises adopt DevOps best practices at scale and collaborate with the broader GitHub ecosystem, which includes more than 40 million developers working across over 100 million projects.
Focus on local developers and students
Indian developers have shown a sharp rise in collaboration, with the number of public repositories in the country growing by 75 percent in the past year. Establishing a local presence is intended to strengthen GitHub's relationships with these developers and support open source work among individual contributors, maintainers, and enterprises.
India is also home to one of the world's largest communities of student developers. To support that ecosystem, GitHub Education is extending its GitHub Hackathon Grant program to students in India. The program provides up to $1,000 in grants for student-organized hackathons, helping more student communities gather and build on GitHub.
Enterprise and partner expansion
Beyond open source, a growing number of Indian companies, including Swiggy and ArisGlobal, are using GitHub Enterprise to build and collaborate on business-critical software. GitHub is working with organizations across industries to modernize their software supply chains and adopt industry best practices for delivering customer experiences.
The company is also expanding its channel partner program in India. This effort is designed to support GitHub Enterprise customers in running their software development operations efficiently and advancing their digital transformation initiatives.
Updates will be shared via the @GitHubIndia Twitter account, and those interested in joining the team can review open positions on GitHub's careers page.
