First Impressions at a New Dojo

Back on the mat after a three-week layoff, a long commute—about ninety minutes by bike and light rail—didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the first session at a new dojo. The trip was well spent, and the plan is to make it out three times a week.

The new setting came with some adjustments: different stretching patterns, a white/black belt hierarchy, and an unfamiliar second bow when entering the mat in a direction I haven’t yet deciphered. Beyond those formalities, the class itself ran smoothly and left a strong impression. Everyone was welcoming and energetic, and the training atmosphere made for a genuinely positive experience.

The end of class brought an unexpected challenge—I was asked to lead the stretching series despite never having seen these exercises before. I got through the entire routine without issue, though it was certainly a memorable ordeal, especially on the first day.

Perhaps the biggest surprise came with the closing announcement: Akira-sensei is scheduled to visit the dojo in a few weeks. That alone is good reason to step up the training pace.
