A year that started with a crash

2022 opened with a literal bang for me. I detailed the events in my post My Car Accident. The incident had a profound impact on my life, and I'm grateful to be alive.

From Remix to a new venture

At the end of 2021, I joined Remix as the director of developer experience. My time there was covered extensively in my departure announcement. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Remix crew, and I'm pleased they were acquired by Shopify. My confidence in Remix's role in the web development ecosystem has never been higher.

I left Remix to pursue a project I've been planning for years, first mentioned in my 2010s decade in review. The goal is to consolidate all my accumulated web development knowledge into a single destination: EpicWeb.dev. More details are in my post I'm building EpicWeb.dev.

Since then, I've invested a significant amount of time—hundreds of hours—into live streaming. Currently, I'm developing the application that will serve as the basis for most of the workshops, tutorials, and articles for EpicWeb.dev. After the new year, I'll begin implementing designs, which will pave the way for turning them into workshops.

Conferences and travel

This year, I created a map to visualize the conferences I've attended and those on my schedule. In 2022, I spoke at 11 events globally:

  1. React Miami
  2. Reactathon
  3. RenderATL
  4. ReactNext
  5. NodeTLV
  6. Infobip Shift
  7. React India
  8. infoShare
  9. ThunderPlains Conf
  10. All Things Open
  11. Modern FrontEnds Live!

The travel was extensive, but the chance to speak to thousands of developers is an honor. For 2023, my confirmed schedule includes:

  1. AgentConf
  2. City of London JS Conf
  3. React Miami
  4. JSDay Canarias
  5. Front Conference

I also have soft invites from several more conferences that are still being planned. I intend to run workshops at many of these events, ideally based on content from EpicWeb.dev. The goal is to deliver each workshop multiple times in person before recording it for the platform. Regardless of my speaking status, I'll definitely attend Remix Conf 2023.

Site infrastructure: a SQLite migration

I migrated my site from a Postgres and Redis setup to SQLite, driven by my confidence in distributed SQLite through LiteFS. The details are documented in my migration post. The migration touched many things at once, and one issue persists: a memory leak that prevents my site from going multi-region again. I plan to address that soon.

Tweet media

While LiteFS isn't production-ready yet, I've chosen it for the EpicWeb.dev application. I'm hopeful it will mature by the time I ship. My own site serves as a testing ground for such bleeding-edge technology—it's exactly how these systems become battle-tested.

Looking ahead to 2023

My primary goal for 2023 is shipping the first batch of content for EpicWeb.dev, with the first half of the year heavily focused on workshops, dependent on completing the app itself. For updates on the journey, you can subscribe to my YouTube channel, join my Discord, or sign up for the mailing list at EpicWeb.dev. I'll be publishing articles and tutorials along the way. I'm eager about what the future holds.
