Git Merge 2025: Two Decades of Git, Two Days in San Francisco

Git Merge 2025 marked the 20th anniversary of Git with a gathering at GitHub HQ in San Francisco. The event drew over 100 in-person attendees and more than 600 online participants, offering a program that ranged from technical deep dives into Git internals to beginner-friendly workflow sessions. Speakers included maintainers, educators, hobbyists, and a high school student, with many joining remotely.

Notable sessions included a live demo of the GitButler CLI by Scott Chacon, and Google's Martin von Zweigbergk discussing how Jujutsu integrates with Git. Other talks covered Git learning through visualization and gamification, new approaches to visualizing repository growth over time, and the future of SHA-256 interoperability, presented by brian m. carlson.

Community Day: Shaping the Roadmap

The second day centered on community collaboration with the annual Git Contributor's Summit and an Unconference. Core maintainers and contributors met both in person and remotely to help shape Git's roadmap for the year ahead. The Unconference opened the floor to all attendees, with whiteboards quickly filling with ideas on branching strategies, Git education, and creative workflows.
