100 million developers now call GitHub home
GitHub announced that more than 100 million developers now use the platform to build, maintain, and contribute to software projects, hitting its 2025 goal two years ahead of schedule. As the developer community grows, GitHub has one focus: keeping developers first.
Who developers are now
The typical developer of 2007 looked vastly different from today’s reality. Back then, developers were often viewed as people building software for technology companies in specific regions. That’s no longer true.
Now, developers are a diverse global group working across industries, tinkering with code, design, and documentation in their spare time, contributing to open source, and conducting scientific research. While nearly one-third of GitHub’s developers came from North America in 2015, the fastest-growing regions today are Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. India alone has more than 10 million developers on GitHub, and Brazil has added over 3 million new developers.
The software they’re writing is just as broad—from hospitals open hospital infrastructure and filmmaking tools to NASA projects and PyTorch, which powers AI and machine learning development. Others are building tools to help loved ones communicate or track medical conditions.
Building the home GitHub believes developers deserve
With the community’s scale, GitHub can no longer focus only on providing tools and encouraging developers to do more. The vision is to give developers everything they need to do their best work.
Pulling in developers from creating pull requests to being empowered by GitHub Copilot’s AI assistance makes GitHub their central hub—not just a place to store code. GitHub Next, the R&D wing, is tackling the future of software development with projects like Code Brushes and Hey, GitHub!, exploring what will exist under that vision.
GitHub sees this milestone as bringing more new developers into technology and helping them work together on the world’s big problems—known and still undefined. When teams of developers come together with everything they need to be at their best, breakthroughs happen.
