Stripe closes Metronome acquisition
Stripe has completed its acquisition of Metronome, a provider of usage-based billing infrastructure. The deal brings together Stripe Billing's existing usage-based and hybrid billing capabilities with Metronome's platform, which is designed for high-volume, multidimensional metering.
Over the past two years, Stripe has expanded Stripe Billing to support usage-based and hybrid pricing models. Thousands of customers, including several fast-growing AI companies, currently use the platform for complex usage-based revenue structures. With Metronome, Stripe plans to extend that work into product catalogs containing thousands of SKUs, sales-led business models, and revenue analytics.
From subscriptions to consumption-based pricing
The acquisition reflects a broader shift in how companies approach monetization. Rather than treating pricing as a static, back-office function, many businesses are now making it an active part of product development. Consumption-based models, in particular, are becoming more common as companies look for flexibility in how they charge customers.
Stripe Billing already supports a range of billing models, including credit burndown for Lovable, outcome-based billing for Intercom, and subscriptions for Anthropic. With Metronome, Stripe expects to handle multidimensional metering for complex product catalogs, such as those used by AI infrastructure providers like OpenAI, as well as custom contracting for companies that pair a sales-led motion with usage-based pricing—Confluent and Anyscale are cited as examples.
What Metronome customers can expect
Metronome customers will gain access to Stripe's global infrastructure and reliability. The two companies say they will build a unified product roadmap for a single monetization platform that supports self-serve product-led growth flows, high-touch sales processes, and purchases through cloud marketplaces. Integrated payments, analytics, revenue recognition, and tax capabilities are intended to provide one system for managing revenue and scaling.
Stripe has announced it will share more details about upcoming Billing updates and product evolution at its Stripe Sessions event. The company is also taking inquiries from businesses interested in its monetization platform.
