PostgreSQL Expands to IBM z-Series Architecture
The PostgreSQL package repository for Debian and Ubuntu, apt.postgresql.org, now supports another hardware platform. Alongside the existing amd64, ppc64el, and arm64 architectures, packages are now available for IBM's z-series — the architecture Debian designates as s390x. The older i386 port remains available, but only for the oldest supported release and Debian unstable.
The new build infrastructure comes from Marist College's LinuxOne cloud. Work on the port began earlier this year, and initial stability issues with recent PostgreSQL versions were addressed with patches from the PostgreSQL developer community. The setup is now fully operational, with s390x support available for both Debian and Ubuntu on apt.postgresql.org.
