First Impressions at PGConf.de
PGConf.de 2026, held at the Haus der Technik in Essen, marked my first PostgreSQL conference. CYBERTEC sponsored the event as a Platinum Partner, and our booth sat directly beside the main lecture hall — a prime spot for conversations with developers moving between sessions. The talks were consistently full, and the conference reportedly drew a record number of lightning talks.
The building itself stood out: Art Deco elegance, geometric proportions, and Nordic-influenced brickwork. But the architecture was only part of the experience. Our booth quickly became a meeting point where CYBERTEC experts and attendees could connect between presentations. The day wrapped up with authentic German food and beer before the second day of sessions.



From Flink Forward to the PostgreSQL Village
My background is in open-source marketing and events, not database engineering. I spent several years as Event Manager for Flink Forward — the largest Apache Flink conference — across Seattle, Berlin, and Barcelona, and I've attended numerous other Apache-related events as a corporate sponsor. Moving to the PostgreSQL ecosystem felt natural because the fundamentals of community-driven growth carry over: trust, collaboration, and shared ownership.
What I learned early in my OSS career is that these communities operate under their own informal rules and cultural norms. Corporate structures tend toward rigid uniformity, but open-source networks thrive on what you might call their own "common law." A marketer coming from a traditional corporate environment has to invest time in understanding these unwritten rules before they can participate meaningfully.

Two Communities, Different DNA
Apache Flink and PostgreSQL are both successful open-source models, but their communities are structured differently. Flink's community is heavily engineering- and research-oriented, managed under the Apache Software Foundation, where a member's standing ties directly to code contributions. Flink's innovation cycle has been rapid and fast-paced in recent years.
PostgreSQL development, by contrast, is highly decentralized. The community places strong emphasis on documentation and prioritizes slower, more strategic long-term growth. Key roles aren't reserved for core developers — meetup organizers, conference volunteers, and trainers all hold meaningful positions. The community is deliberate about onboarding: conferences include tracks dedicated to welcoming newcomers, organizing local meetups, and sharing international case studies. One session at PGConf.de, for instance, covered how volunteers built PGDay Armenia from the ground up.
What struck me as a marketer was how volunteers develop their own grassroots marketing efforts to improve the community internally — without relying on corporate vendors or large enterprise backing.
Bottom-Up Organization Versus Corporate Sponsorship
The PostgreSQL community is remarkably democratic, approachable, and accessible. In engineering-heavy tech spaces, deeply technical discussions can raise barriers to entry. PostgreSQL counters this by focusing on the "PostgreSQL Village" — nurturing the global database ecosystem through mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and localized events.
Many OSS communities depend on massive corporate budgets to stage their tech events. PostgreSQL events, in contrast, are organized from the bottom up. Community members plan their conferences and then welcome corporate sponsors to participate. The event landscape is diverse by design: country-specific events, local meetups, regular user group gatherings, PGDays, and PGConfs are driven by local enthusiasts rather than a few flagship global conferences.
Living in Berlin, I have numerous PostgreSQL events within reach — often accessible at minimal personal financial cost. I also observed a notable feature of this pluralistic culture: database companies, sometimes direct market competitors, work hand-in-hand to ensure a single event succeeds, consistently putting community interests first.
Resilience Through Shared Ownership
Both Flink and PostgreSQL demonstrate open-source success, but each is optimized for different goals. Flink stands out for its innovation pace and engineering focus in real-time data processing. PostgreSQL shows what long-term resilience looks like when a community is built around software stability, deep collaboration, and shared ownership.
PostgreSQL's success isn't tied to a single corporation or passing trend. It's driven by a culture of trust, openness, and sustainable governance — which has produced more than a database engine. It has cultivated one of the most resilient and welcoming ecosystems in open-source history: the "PostgreSQL Village."
