Episode Preview: The Open Source Analytics Dilemma
On this month's The ReadME Podcast, hosts Martin Woodward and Neha Batra explore a tension at the heart of modern open source: how maintainers can understand their projects' impact without overstepping community expectations around privacy and control.
Scarf founder and CEO Avi Press joins the conversation to unpack this challenge from a maintainer's perspective. "It's paradoxical that we preach openness, except when it's how we use the software. I get it, we think of open source as being ownerless, permissionless, and accessible by anyone. But with analytics, the model is very much built around ownership," Press explains. He argues that project maintainers must be able to access usage data if the open source ecosystem is to sustain itself. "My argument here is that if anyone is going to have access to it, maintainers must be one of those groups of people," he says. "I think that if we want to see open source thrive in the long run, we need to understand the value and the impact it has on the world."
