Beyond the syllabus: New GitHub Education shows for student developers

The GitHub Education Stream Team (GEST) has expanded its lineup of live shows aimed at helping students and recent graduates navigate the job market. Hosted by student leaders and regional experts from around the world, the new programs cover interview prep, soft skills, open source contributions, and non-technical career paths in tech — topics that rarely show up in a college curriculum.

Interview prep, simplified

GitHub field expert Khushboo Verma hosts Tech Interviews Simplified, a weekly show designed to demystify the entire technical interview process. The program walks through each stage, from screening to behavioral rounds, and covers roles in product management, software engineering, and other fields.

Verma draws on her own experience and that of other professionals to share practical preparation tips. The show also emphasizes that interviews — whether successful or not — are learning opportunities, and that rejection is a normal part of the process. Soft skills for LATAM students

Manu Castriollon hosts El Parche Dev, a show that puts the spotlight on the non-technical skills that are just as important as classroom knowledge. The program aims to give tech students in LATAM direct access to industry leaders and guidance for career growth.

Best friends Dilum De Silva and Isuru Abeywardana host TechSide Chat, a community-oriented show that grew out of their own habit of discussing interviews before and after they happen. The idea, they say, is that not everyone has a friend in tech to bounce ideas off of — so they built a live community for that purpose.

The show centers on experience sharing. Guests, including seasoned tech leads, talk about their personal journeys: how they landed roles, what their first day felt like, how they made new friends, and how they adapted to different companies and countries. The goal is to equip junior technologists with a realistic view of what careers look like at different stages, roles, and companies. TechSide Chat goes live every Saturday at 8 pm IST.

Full-stack development in public

Code Kitty brings together campus experts Shreya Prasad, Ahamed Safnaj, and Chamod Shehanka, each with experience in different industries. The show is designed to introduce students to open source contribution by walking through the entire life cycle of a full-stack web application — from development and deployment to live debugging.

The hosts are driven by a desire to close the gap between academic learning and on-the-job realities, and to get more students involved in open source. Code Kitty streams every Sunday at 8:30 pm IST. Recent episodes are available via the show's GitHub repository.

Non-technical roles in tech

Ifunanya Ikemma, a longtime advocate for women in tech, hosts Tech it with Iphie, a show aimed at helping women break into the industry regardless of their academic background. Ikemma makes the case that a technical degree is not a prerequisite for building a meaningful career in tech.

The program highlights real-life examples of professionals who did not study engineering but still contribute significantly — pointing to the accountants, lawyers, and subject matter experts that every tech company relies on alongside its engineers.
