Sponsor-gated repositories
Maintainers and organizations with GitHub Sponsors enabled can now attach a private repository to each sponsorship tier. Sponsors at that level automatically receive access, with invitations handled by GitHub—no extra management once it's set up. This formalizes a workflow many maintainers previously handled by hand.
Typical uses include:
- Sponsorware—giving backers access to closed projects.
- Private Discussions or Issues for sponsor communication.
- Early access to code before it's open sourced.

Setup details are in the tier management documentation.
Custom amount floors
Tier settings now support custom sponsorship amounts with a configurable minimum, giving maintainers tighter control over contributions.

Tax and location data
Transaction exports have been expanded with geographic and VAT information, covering the data many sponsors need for sales tax reporting. More details are in the sales tax documentation.
Visibility and onboarding
GitHub has added a promotion for Sponsors right on Issues, prompting users to support work they interact with.

Maintainers can now also write a per-tier welcome message, shown to each new sponsor after they sign up. These are configured from the "Sponsors tiers" page when editing a tier.

Attribution links
Sponsor page URLs now accept arbitrary metadata to help track which channels bring in sponsors. The collected metadata appears in the transaction export; see the docs for URL specifications.
What's on the roadmap
GitHub is expanding its beta program around companies funding the open source projects they depend on; interested organizations can contact [email protected]. Discovery is also a known pain point for both funders and maintainers. Future work will target making it easier to explore dependencies, decide whom to support, and help maintainers grow their audience and funding. Feedback can be left in the Sponsors feedback discussion.
