Preparing for the Quantum Threat

The prospect of quantum computing raises a fundamental question about the security of today's encrypted data. While practical quantum computers may still be years away, the threat they pose to current cryptographic systems is real: a sufficiently powerful machine could eventually break the encryption that protects sensitive data transmitted across the internet.

Meta is taking this "quantum apocalypse" scenario seriously. In a recent episode of the Meta Tech Podcast, engineers Sheran and Rafael—who lead Meta's post-quantum readiness efforts—discuss the risks with host Pascal Hartig (@passy). The conversation covers the nature of the quantum threat and the steps Meta is taking to ensure today's users remain protected against future quantum-based attacks.
