When Scraper Bots Force a Second Look at Bot Management
For any business running public-facing web properties, bot traffic is an inevitable reality. Among the many types of bots, scraper bots are particularly prevalent in eCommerce and online portal environments. While some scraping is benign—search engines indexing content, for example, or price comparison sites informing consumer decisions—much of it is not. Malicious scrapers harvest images, product listings, and pricing data at scale, often feeding that information directly to competitors who replicate content or undercut prices in near real time.
The challenge for bot protection systems is that good and bad scraper bots behave in broadly similar ways. The result is a high incidence of false positives: legitimate bots or real customers get flagged as malicious. In practice, that means genuine visitors face repeated authentication challenges, or in worse cases, are blocked entirely.
Latency is another factor to weigh. Many bot management providers divert traffic to a dedicated data centre for analysis, scrubbing it of bot requests before forwarding it to the origin site. This approach works but adds delay to every request, degrading the user experience. A partner with a large network footprint, conversely, can inspect traffic in real time across any data centre on their network, with no additional hops.
The Customer Story
One online property portal—referred to here as Property Portal—started its relationship with Cloudflare using the company's DDoS and WAF offerings. The portal's brand and traffic grew, and along with that growth came an increase in scraper bot activity. The business was facing the classic market-leader problem: competing sites appeared to be reproducing their content and matching their price changes almost instantly, a sure sign that scraping had turned from a nuisance into IP theft.
At the time, Cloudflare did not yet offer its own bot management product, so Property Portal engaged a market-leading third-party vendor for that purpose. Initially, the solution seemed to address the problem, but issues soon surfaced:
- All traffic was routed through a scrubbing centre, which degraded performance slightly.
- A small percentage of malicious bots still slipped through, continuing to scrape valuable content.
- More damagingly, the portal saw a significant number of false positives, with legitimate buyers, sellers, and renters repeatedly challenged to prove they were human as they navigated the site.
By the time Cloudflare's Bot Management offering had matured, Property Portal's pain points were clear. The account team presented the case for consolidating bot management with the existing DDoS and WAF services. The customer's success criteria were explicit:
- No disruption: do not degrade the user experience or require domain changes in the switch.
- Stop more of the bad traffic.
- Most importantly, let more genuine users through, reducing the number of authentication challenges compared with the incumbent provider.
Cloudflare's solution met all three criteria. Property Portal also gained the advantage of consolidating multiple security services under one vendor. For the customer's end users, the experience improved, while Cloudflare could claim credit for helping protect the portal's intellectual property from imitators and their scraper bots.
The outcome reinforces a straightforward principle in customer success, one that is right in the name: making the customer successful. Here, that meant stopping more malicious traffic while reducing friction for legitimate users—and, not incidentally, earning a customer's trust through an expansion of services rather than a new vendor hunt.
