Open Source AI Gets a Funding Boost: GitHub Accelerator Opens 2024 Applications

Applications are now open for the next cohort of GitHub Accelerator, with submissions reviewed on a rolling basis until March 5 at 12 pm PT. The program, which provides financial support, mentorship, training, and visibility to open source projects, is pivoting its 2024 focus squarely toward artificial intelligence.

Why AI?

The decision to theme this year's cohort around AI reflects broader trends across the open source ecosystem. Developers are collaborating on projects spanning the entire AI stack—from training frameworks and models to responsible AI tooling and evaluation systems. Generative AI projects are not only surging in total numbers but are also climbing into the top 10 most popular projects by contributor count on GitHub.

However, building an AI-focused business in the open introduces unique hurdles. Beyond the familiar time and funding constraints of open source work, AI projects carry elevated expenses along with significant ethical, security, and legal considerations. The program aims to counter these obstacles by funding projects that build AI-based solutions under an open source license, with curriculum guidance tailored to navigating this complexity.

Program Structure and Support

The 10-week program kicks off April 22 and blends one-on-one sessions, group work, and mentorship. Selected projects receive:

  • $40,000 per project in non-dilutive funding.
  • 5-10 hours per week of live instruction, workshops, and homework.
  • Office hours with the GitHub team for security reviews.
  • Q&As with enterprise GitHub Sponsors, community members, and GitHub leaders.
  • An introduction to M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, plus at least one office hour.
  • Free access to relevant GitHub products, including a full year of GitHub Copilot.
  • Eligible projects may receive free Azure AI infrastructure credits, including preferred access to high-end GPU virtual machine clusters and white-glove go-to-market support.
  • A shared Slack channel for cohort collaboration and support.

The program culminates in a virtual Demo Day where participants showcase progress to community members, GitHub leadership, and potential funding partners. Alumni gain ongoing networking and support opportunities from GitHub.

Eligibility and Selection

GitHub Accelerator targets early-stage open source projects and open source-first companies up to seed stage. While any project stage may apply, participants must meet these requirements before the program begins:

  • Clear open source license.
  • Clear governance strategy.
  • Deep focus in AI, Machine Learning, or AI infrastructure.
  • Commitment from core leaders to engage in required programming.
  • A plan for utilizing the funds.

The application is free and requires basic details: project information, repository and website links, a list of founders, and an email address. Individual maintainers, developers, and small teams from any of the 100+ regions supported by GitHub Sponsors are welcome to apply. Projects are accepted regardless of hosting platform.

Key Facts for Applicants

Ten projects will be selected by a committee. Applicants can strengthen their chances by demonstrating an active, growing user base, a clear vision for project growth and maintenance, and intent to pursue open source work full-time.

Selected participants must commit to working on their projects full-time (40 hours per week) during the program, including the 5-10 hours of weekly instruction and workshops. All meetings will be held in Pacific Time.
